All our wines are vegan certified.

Wines produced by Whale Islands have been produced completely without animal products aiding efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute towards a cleaner, greener planet.

Instead of using animal-based fining products such as casein (milk), isinglass (fish) and gelatine, we use plant-based fining products such as pea and potato protein.   The winemakers adhere to a stringent process to have the wines certified as vegan by the New Zealand Vegan Society, ensuring there are no animal products in the wines, and that they are GMO free.

Maui's brothers wouldn't take him fishing, so he hid in their canoe. Once they were far out to sea, Maui popped out, and his brothers, though annoyed, had to let him stay. While they fished, Maui made his own hook from a paua shell and his grandmother's jawbone. Since his brothers refused to give him bait, he used his own blood. He then chanted and pulled up a massive fish.

Maui went to find a priest to properly thank the gods and warned his brothers not to touch the fish until the ritual was done. Ignoring him, they started cutting up and eating the fish. This angered the gods, causing the fish to thrash and become rough and mountainous. This is why much of Aotearoa (New Zealand) is rugged. According to the story, the North Island is the fish Maui caught, the South Island is his canoe, Cape Kidnappers is his hook, and the Whale Islands are smaller fish that were pulled up with the big one
